The Clark County Zoning Commission approved the proposed Mt. Charleston Fire Station during its Aug. 5 meeting.
Clark County is the owner and developer behind the fire station. Design work is being conducted by Carpenter Sellers Del Gatto Architects. JW Zunino Landscape Architecture is handling landscape design. SHF International LLC is the general contractor.
According to the request for proposals from February, the estimated cost is between $14.3M and $15M. The two-story building will be 10.6KSF and stand 32 feet tall.
The new building will have a metal roof and fascia. According to the agenda, “The exterior consists of painted metal wall panels in rustic and black earth-tone colors, complemented by wood tongue-and-groove elements. Bi-folding apparatus doors face north, and aluminum storefront window systems are incorporated on each elevation. The building design includes multiple varied wall planes and rooflines that echo the surrounding mountain forms.”
The new fire station is to be designed to represent the nearby mountains. The intent of the facility is to serve the surrounding communities and increase public safety.
The lower portion of the building will have parking and mechanical spaces. The upper floor is set to contain the lobby, training area, apparatus bay, sleeping quarters, offices, dayroom and kitchen.
The station will be raised on concrete piers to protect it from stormwater and flooding. Three bi-fold doors will sit on the northern façade of the building for fire trucks.
The fire station is proposed on a 3.25-acre site zoned Public Facility at 75 Ski Chalet Pl. The fire station will share the site with the existing Mount Charleston Library. The library sits at the central portion of the site.
Currently, there is an existing volunteer fire station structure at the NEC of the site. This facility will be demolished to make way for the new, improved fire station.
Access is to be provided via the existing driveway on Ski Chalet Place. A new apparatus driveway will also be installed along Kyle Canyon Road. Parking will be located beneath the new building. A new emergency signal will be installed west of the structure at Kyle Canyon Road.
The location of the fire station is expected to improve response times. To facilitate this, other improvements, such as a heated Apparatus Bay apron, are planned.
The Mt. Charleston Fire Station was part of the Zoning Commission’s routine action items; therefore, it was unanimously approved without discussion.
