Nevada State University recently launched an initiative to expand its Henderson campus and develop approximately 450 acres into classrooms, housing and sports complexes.
NSU’s SMART Growth Initiative plan is intended to bring the school from its current 7,500 students to 20,000 students by 2047. University officials intend to make “intentional” moves surrounding its future. Specific structures mentioned would be science/technology buildings, performing arts facilities, office spaces, health care facilities, sports recreation facilities and a place to hold commencement ceremonies.
In September, the University Area Livable Centers Study was approved by Henderson City Council. The study reviewed 1,400 acres, including the campus, residential areas and 85 acres of vacant, City-owned land. The study was a joint effort between the City and the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada as part of its Livable Centers Study Program.
Residents have expressed a desire for future developments to be safe and walkable. Additional projects may include a police station, green spaces, grocery stores, public art and a transit center connected to RTC services.
Since adopting the plan, the City has begun updating its College Area Plan and area zoning. A board of trustees was also formed to guide campus development. (Source)
