Economic development officials with Clark County and the City of Henderson highlighted manufacturing and tourism as ways to diversify southern Nevada’s economy during a breakfast meeting at The Orleans of NAIOP Southern Nevada.
The meeting featured Shani Coleman, director of economic development for Clark County and Jared Smith, director of economic development and tourism for Henderson. The breakfast was moderated by Cassie Catania-Hsu, managing director for CBRE.
Smith pointed out that Haas Automation recently held groundbreaking ceremonies for its 2.4MSF manufacturing facility. Haas’ new facility will cost more than $400M and employ up to 1,400 people. The company is moving from California to Nevada. The facility is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
Haas also owns 60 acres across the street from its planned facility. The company is anticipated to build 2M-4MSF of speculative space.
Coleman explained that many Californian businesses want to relocate to the Silver State as the Golden State becomes more expensive.
Coleman noted that the County is planning an innovation district in the southwest valley along 215 Beltway from Bufalo Drive to Decatur Blvd. The district will include Switch, the University of Nevada Las Vegas Harry Reid Technology Park and UnCommons mixed-use development.
Coleman also cited the dark fiber line, which received some County funding, that connects the UNLV research park and Clark County to a supercomputer. The introduction of the supercomputer is anticipated to allure innovation companies with a need for high computing power. The County is the only municipality in Nevada with access to a supercomputer.
Smith mentioned the importance of governmental jurisdictions working together to secure leads within the region. (Source)
