RTC Considering Roundabout on Goni Road in Carson City

The Goni Road and Arrowhead Drive roundabout was considered at the Carson City Regional Transportation Commission meetingon Jan. 8.

During the meeting, the RTC analyzed the findings of a study conducted at the intersection. The study was conducted by Kimley-Horn and Associates Inc. The intersection is expected to receive a Level of Service evaluation of E by 2026, which reflects the intersection being at capacity.

The proposal is a part of the District 1 Goni Road Rehabilitation Project, which includes pavement rehabilitation/safety improvements between College Parkway and Arrowhead Drive on Goni Road. The location of the improvements is an important route to industrial/employment centers toward College Parkway and I-580.

If selected, the roundabout is estimated to cost $3.2M. A traffic signal is estimated to cost $1.8M. Currently, RTC does not have funding for either alternative. The RTC is considering asking the Nevada Department of Transportation for the necessary funds through its Highway Safety Improvement Program. HSIP funds would require a 5% local match. The Federal Highway Administration noted roundabouts can reduce fatal/serious injury crashes by as much as 78%. (Source)
