The Clark County Department of Aviation is continuing to plan the Harry Reid International Airport Modernization Project behind the scenes.

The Department of Aviation last updated the Clark County Commission on the status of the project roughly six months ago. A construction timeline and cost estimate have yet to be announced. HNTB is the DCR Architect.

Editor’s Note: According to Harry Reid personnel, HNTB is providing early stage planning services to create a DCR. Once the DCR is approved, phasing will be determined and a design and construction firm will be selected using a public procurement process.

Concourse A and Concourse B will both be expanded from a collective 39 to 65 gates. To do this, existing terminals will be reconfigured, traffic circulation will be improved, and other upgrades will take place to increase capacity.

The Modernization Project will consist of a series of construction projects that will allow the airport to undergo construction in phases. Some of these, such as a new warehouse building, a Customs and Border Protection facility, an expansion of the A and C gate terminals and a renovation of the Terminal 1 circulation plan and fire station, are imminent or already under construction.

For example, the 92.7KSF warehouse has already been completed. The Customs and Border Protection facility and Westside Charter Ramp are currently being planned. New concession space and restrooms will be added to the A and C gate buildings.

Terminal 1 is set to receive new elevators and escalators to improve passenger flow. The escalators will provide the space necessary to add an additional 330 parking stalls to the garage.

The driverless trams are also expected to be modernized. They are currently 10 years old and have roughly two million miles on them.

The Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting Station project is anticipated to begin construction next year and is slated to conclude by 2028.

The largest portion of the overall Modernization Project is the addition of new gates. A new pier with roughly 11 gate spaces is planned on the former site of Terminal 2. Once complete, gates A and B will be reorganized from the current satellite arrangement to a pier layout.

The final phase of the Modernization Project includes the CCDOA administration building and parking garage. Once complete, the terminals will be renamed.

Clark County will likely seek federal funding to pay for the modernization project. (Source: Las Vegas Review-Journal)
