Construction Employment Continues to Grow While Other Fields Dip

As of December 2024, total nonfarm employment in Nevada has seen a 0.4% increase year-over-year, despite a slight dip from November to December. Construction, the field accounting for the sixth highest employment in the state, demonstrated the highest respective growth.

In total, Nevada’s YoY employment growth totals 5,600 jobs, according to statistics published by nevadaworkforce.com. November to December 2024 saw the Silver State lose just 300 jobs. Private sector jobs make up 88.1% of positions in Nevada.

Construction of Buildings and Specialty Trade Contractors saw a collective increase of 500 positions month-over-month. Notably, the Construction industry as a whole has seen a 6.3% growth YoY. In total, this reflects a gain of 7,400 jobs. Of those jobs, Specialty Trade Contractors saw a 6.8% increase, or 5,800 positions. Construction of Buildings saw a 6.0% increase, or 1,200 positions.

The construction industry accounts for 7.8% of all jobs in the state. Within the industry, Construction of Buildings comprises 1.3% of all jobs and Specialty Trade Contractors make up 5.7% of all employment. Construction is tied with Information for the highest sector of YoY growth in the state. Despite similar growth rates, Information only makes up 1.3% of employment in Nevada.

Fields Experiencing Negative Growth

Four of the eleven umbrella categories saw negative YoY growth rates from December 2023 to December 2024.

Trade, Transportation and Utilities, the largest group of employment in Nevada at 19.2% of jobs, saw a -1.5% change.

Of fields accounted for in Trade, Transportation and Utilities, Health and Personal Care Retailers saw the starkest decrease at -5.7% YoY growth. The field accounts for 0.6% of all employment in the state. Wholesale Trade saw a similar decrease at -5.5%. Leisure and Hospitality continued to drop, falling -1% YoY, a loss of 3,600 jobs.

Education also continued to dip slightly at a YoY rate of -0.6%. Other notable decreases include Financial Activities at -1.5% and Professional and Business Services at -1.9%.

Other Fields Experiencing Positive Growth

Of the 11 umbrella fields featured in the report, seven of them experienced growth in the last year.

The push for more medical professionals in Nevada has seemingly paid off, as Health Care and Social Assistance, Ambulatory Health Care Services and Hospitals saw employment increases of at least 4.7%.

Manufacturing demonstrated slow growth with a 1.3% increase. Mining and Logging increased at a 2% rate YoY. Other Services saw a 4.9% increase and Government saw a 2.4% increase.
