Six New Pickleball Courts Approved for Mills Park in Carson City

Credit: Scott Neuffer/Nevada Appeal

The Carson City Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a nearly $1.1M contract with Spanish Springs Construction Inc. to replace two tennis courts behind the aquatic center in Mills Park with six pickleball courts.

The project also received approval for $170.8K in Community Development Block Grant funding at the meeting. Previously, the project has been allocated $421.9K in funds from the American Rescue Plan Act. The ARPA funds prevented the project from being eligible to receive funds through the Southern Nevada Public Land Management Act.

Six years ago, Dave Whitefield and Juana Beguelin began a campaign with the nonprofit organization, Foundation for Carson City Parks and Recreation, to convert two other tennis courts into eight pickleball courts. The original eight were finished in 2019.

Whitefield and Beguelin have taken care of the courts and have been fundraising to provide new amenities, such as shade structures and benches. Post-tension concrete has been selected for the new courts to keep them from cracking and to maintain safety.

The eight courts frequently have lines and struggle to hold tournaments. The addition of six new courts will be able to support pickleball tournaments and cut down on the long lines.

Demolition is expected to begin this winter, with a targeted completion of late spring/early summer. According to City staff, Lloyd Sports + Engineering is the design firm of record. Spanish Springs Construction is the general contractor. (Source)
