After passing both houses of Congress, the Sloan Canyon Conservation and Lateral Pipeline Act has been signed into law by President Donald Trump.
The approval of the law instructs the Bureau of Land Management to give the Southern Nevada Water Authority the necessary rights-of-way to construct the Horizon Lateral pipeline.
The pipeline, which could have a price tag as high as $2B, will bolster Southern Nevada’s water supply and protect it from disruptions if the existing South Valley Lateral pipeline is to ever become inoperable. The South Valley pipeline transports approximately 40% of Southern Nevada’s water supply. (NVBEX; March 4)
This iteration of the legislation was proposed by U.S. Rep. Dina Titus (D-Nev.), while a companion bill was proposed by Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.)
The approval calls for the addition of 9,290 acres of land to be added to the more than 48,400-acre Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area.
