Nye County has submitted a letter requesting that the Nevada Department of Transportation hold a study on the intersection of Highway 160 and Mountain Falls Blvd.
The Nye County Commission discussed the letter during its Aug. 26 meeting. County staff and representatives from NDOT met the week prior to discuss the study. According to County representatives, NDOT is more interested in conducting an entire corridor study as opposed to a single study on the intersection.
A study on the entirety of the corridor could take up to three years to complete. County representatives stated the county does not want to wait that long for the study. The commission then moved to submit a letter in an attempt to expedite the process.
NDOT does not have the available budget in the current fiscal year, so it wouldn’t be considered until the next fiscal year.
County representatives are keen to improve the intersection as it has caused several major crashes. NDOT data found 21 crashes at the intersection from 2016 to 2023. Additionally, 10 of these accidents resulted in injuries.
Currently, there is an ongoing master traffic study update for the Mountain Falls subdivision. Preliminary data has found the intersection will have an “F” rating by 2030. Moreover, there are roughly 5,000 additional homes planned in the area that would add additional traffic. (Source)
