The Boulder City Planning Commission approved Boulder City Municipal Airport’s request for a height variance for an air traffic control tower.
Boulder City Municipal Airport is the owner and developer. Q&D Construction is the general contractor. AJT Engineering, Inc. is the structural engineer, while Kimley-Horn and Associates, Inc. is the civil engineer.
The Boulder City Municipal Airport Air Traffic Control Tower Project will total 108 feet in height. According to the project narrative, the tower at 1201 Airport Road is needed to improve safety and airport efficiency.
The project narrative also says, “The final color palette is still under development, but it is expected to be compatible with surrounding airport facilities and reflective of the desert character of the region.”
The City of Boulder City joined the Federal Contract Tower Program, which will provide funding for air traffic controllers once the tower is constructed. The program also provides funding for site selection, environmental assessments and design work.
The Federal Aviation Administration recently provided the City with a $10M grant to assist in the construction of the tower. Total construction costs are estimated at $12M-$13M, according to the public notice calling for subcontractor prequalifications. The project is expected to be completed by summer 2028.
