The Carson Area Metropolitan Planning Organization approved the 2050 Regional Transportation Plan during its Jan. 14 meeting.
The plan consists of short- and long-term transportation projects to complete in the region over the next 25 years. CAMPO encompasses Carson City, northern Douglas County and western Lyon County.
The plan notes the population, particularly in Lyon County, is expected to continue to rise. Notably, the region is poised to experience substantial increases in its senior population.
One of the obstacles the plan attempts to address is the lack of funding for preventative pavement maintenance. To combat this, CAMPO will focus on projects that “emphasize preservation.”
The plan lays out individual projects that each have inflation estimates built in. The next 25 years have an estimated revenue of $878.8M. The majority of this funding comes from federal sources. The plan currently has roughly $800M in specific projects.
Upcoming projects include the $24.4M North Carson Street Complete Streets Project; the $17.6M Topsy Lane intersection improvement project in Douglas County, and the $1.4M intersection and safety improvements at Highway 50 and Highlands Drive project in Mound House.
Notable projects in the latter half of the program include the $98.7M freeway interchange at I-580, Highway 50 and Highway 395 in south Carson, and the $53.8M East Dayton Bridge Project. Unfunded projects are estimated at $436M.
While the RTP does not explicitly include individual local road projects, properly maintaining the entire region is estimated at $2.3B. That is to say, the RTP only includes large projects that may be eligible for federal funding.
The pavement condition index in Carson City is currently rated at 55, which is considered poor. Due to the lack of necessary funding, the PCI is expected to reach as low as 20 by 2050.
There are a variety of federal funding options included, such as the Surface Transportation Block Grants and the Federal Transit Administration’s public transportation funding. (Source)
