Clark County Commissioners Approve Funding for $39M Animal Shelter

The Clark County Board of Commissioners has approved the allocation of $39M to fund the design and construction of a Supplemental Animal Shelter.

The shelter is expected to be around 40KSF on a roughly seven- to eight-acre parcel in Clark County, according to the County’s agenda item development report.

The Animal Foundation is the only publicly funded shelter to serve Las Vegas, North Las Vegas and Clark County. As southern Nevada continues to grow rapidly, so does the need for expanded facilities to better serve the community and the animals within it.

Commissioners additionally approved $3M to create a temporary shelter at Silver Bowl Park to assist with overcrowding while the expanded facility is under development.

The Animal Foundation was also granted an additional $775K to “establish lifesaving initiatives by investing funds to support the goal of saving all healthy and treatable animals.”

Lori Heeren of the Nevada SPCA said that as things become more expensive, people will not be able to afford their pets, and that if this trend continues, more and more pets will be left without a home.

Clark County will now work toward finding a site and commencing the design process.
