A commercial grading permit was filed by the Athletics to allow the excavation of the Tropicana site for the construction of its $1.8B Major League Baseball stadium.

The site is being developed by the Athletics. Bjarke Ingels Group and HNTB are the design firms. A joint venture between Mortenson and McCarthy Building Companies is the general contractor.

Other parties involved include MEP engineer Henderson Engineers, civil engineer Lochsa Engineering and structural engineer Thornton Tomasetti.

The A’s are using a portion of a greater site that is shared with Bally’sand its proposed hotel/resort. Prior to construction, the A’s must receive entitlements from Clark County. The entitlements are intended to ensure the ballpark will be constructed in compliance with the County’s code.

A commercial power permit was recently issued by the County under an application filed by contractor Morse Electric. The power will be permanent and last from construction throughout the stadium’s lifetime. The power will also service trailers that will be used as office spaces for the contractors. The power work is valued at $530K.

The A’s also previously submitted an application for a land use permit, which is still being processed. The A’s are to give an update at a Las Vegas Stadium Authority meeting on March 6, after publication deadline. New renderings of the interior portion of the stadium are expected to be unveiled at the meeting. In the meantime, the team will play some of its spring training games at the Minor League Las Vegas Ballpark.

A building permit must be issued prior to the construction of the stadium. The permit must be approved by the Federal Aviation Administration, which may see a slower process due to staffing cutbacks. Currently, the FAA is holding a public comment period through March 22.

Construction is slated to begin between April and June, allowing the stadium to open its doors by the 2028 MLB season.
