The Carson City Board of Supervisors is slated to review the Carson City Master Plan after the Planning Commission recommended its approval during its Wednesday meeting.
The recommendation was unanimously approved by the Planning Commission. The master plan does not include the downtown square master plan. Many residents attended the meeting to oppose the adoption of the new plan claiming it would ruin Carson City’s “small-town character.”
Locals were opposed to high-density housing, traffic and quality of life. One resident went as far as saying, “These people are angry and upset, and they should be because our town is basically being destroyed.” Other residents argued approval should be delayed, allowing locals to fully understand what effects approval would have.
Some local businesses were supportive of the master plan and even wanted more areas for affordable housing to accommodate workers.
City officials reminded residents a master plan is a policy document that outlines zoning codes. Officials also stated the City met with numerous residents, businesses and groups and dispersed more than 18,000 postcards.
As residents were generally averse to multifamily developments, the master plan was designed to put a focus on low-density residential and medium-density residential. The majority of areas dedicated to mixed-use and multifamily have been that way for nearly two decades.
Commissioners also approved around 150 revisions to the master plan. (Source)
