The Reno City Council approved an annexation for the Trego Grid Battery Energy Storage System Project during its May 6 meeting.
Trego Grid LLC is the owner and developer. Wood Rodgers Inc. is the civil engineering firm and project representative.
The 200-megawatt Trego Grid project is planned on a roughly 25.4-acre portion of a 60-acre site near the Talus Valley housing complex off South Meadows Parkway. This project previously appeared in multiple subscriber-exclusive NVBEX articles.
The staff report says, “The BESS system consists of 256 Tesla Megapack Units across 16-unit pods which are stepped up the hillside to reduce grading and lessen visual impact.”
Once constructed, Trego Grid will be connected to NV Energy’s Mira Loma substation south of Talus Valley. The Planning Commission approved a conditional use permit for the BESS project in March.
City Council’s approval allows developers to annex additional land under Reno’s land use. The meeting only considered the annexation of land, not the project itself.
Supporters of the project argued Reno will benefit in that it will now be able to obtain tax revenue from the land. Opponents have fire concerns and cite its proximity to residential areas. Supporters say improved BESS technology has significantly less fire risk. The project itself will next be considered by the Truckee Meadows Regional Planning Commission.
