Gov. Joe Lombardo signed two bills into law that are centered around extending the timelines of existing taxes.
The two bills, Assembly Bill 530 and Senate Bill 451, extend existing local taxes throughout Nevada. AB 530 is focused on fuel revenue indexing and was extended for another 10 years. Fuel revenue indexing allows fuel taxes to be adjusted to keep up with rising materials and labor costs to maintain roadways.
SB 451, on the other hand, is a 0.2% property tax that will expire in 2027. Revenues go toward providing salaries for police officers.
Opponents of the bills argued they should have returned to public votes to be passed. Gov. Lombardo vetoed a fuel revenue indexing proposal in 2023, saying he wanted to consider other solutions. This time around, he approved it but said he was not fully on board with how it was approached.
Lombardo ultimately approved the tax extension, as it was necessary to proceed with transportation projects. He went on to say his office is trying to find a statutory amendment that would require sunset bills to go before the ballot prior to expiring. (Source)
