The Sparks City Council voted to move forward with pursuing the design and construction of a new City Hall building during its Oct. 27 meeting.
While many details surrounding the new City Hall have yet to be determined, City Council is providing the Sparks Redevelopment Agency with $10M to construct the facility. Funding is coming directly from the City of Sparks’ redevelopment projects fund.
The funds are unable to be used for other purposes, such as Sparks’ $21.4M general fund deficit; however, councilmembers said the sale of the current City Hall building can be used to replenish the general fund.
The new City Hall will be constructed on an eight-acre site in the Sparks Marina district.
The decision comes as the 56-year-old building ranked 69th in a survey covering the ugliest 100 buildings in the United States. City staff said the aged building is prone to maintenance problems, is overburdened, and that its offices and meeting spaces are obsolete.
Staff went on to specify the building has issues with plumbing, its HVAC system, its roof and its overall space. (Source)
